Okay, I’m ready to answer this now. XD

My designs are stiff and stale and have been for awhile. I come from a costume design background where the primary focus is “Can the shop interpret the design?” I tend to approach my illustrations in the same way without thinking about it, “Is the…

So here’s another magically beautiful Glen Keane moment. Now when we’re all talking about romantic moments in the beauty and the beast we usually think of the ending where’s Belle’s crying over the Beast and then he transforms and then they kiss (BEAUTIFUL kiss scene by the way) however I think this part here is extremely poignant and I’ve been watching it for a while.

I don’t have to reiterate how Glen Keane has the magical way of beautifully weaving raw human emotions into his animated characters because it’s just a fact that he’s a genius at it but now I’d like to turn attention to the fact that he does it amazingly here AND he manages to pull it off with a really NON human character. Speaking of course here about the Beast.

What can I say about the Beast except for the fact that he’s an amazing feat of animation from his design to his animation and this little gif here is like…the epitome of that sensitivity and beautiful human emotion that he has. He’s the giant, “ugly” beast who as we’ve seen can be extraordinarily violent, throwing around chairs, banging on doors, kicking things around. He’s got a lot of anger and we see that. But here we get this very, very human beast. It’s such a stark contrast to the Beast we knew before and that’s why I love it so much. The way he strokes Belle’s hair, very gently, not touching her neck. There’s something very beautiful about the way he lets it linger on his finger (or claw or whatever you people call it) and the way he looks at. We’ve really got this sense of desparately wanting to touch her and be near her without going overboard. What really kills me about this bit is his eyes. Maybe the rest of him is quite beastly but there’s something about those eyes that just draws you in. They’re warm and familiar and really that’s what makes this scene. His eye convey these intensely raw emotions and that’s no exception here. In a matter of seconds we see him go from looking very confused almost…maybe concerned to just looking utterly defeated and really it’s all in his eyes.

I don’t have much to say on Belle here, personally and that’s largely in part due to the fact that we only see her from the back through most of this but there is a way we see her looking at the Beasty when we first see her that is rather nice. There is a way in which she’s now comfortable with letting the Beast touch her (well…her hair anyway) that’s a stark contrast from the beginning of the story, but I feel like the Beast is really the star of this scene. He really dominates it.

Seriously I can’t get over how much of an inspiration Glen Keane is. Every time I watch his animation it’s just magical.

Keane while working on Tangled (2010)

Glen Keane (1954—) has been making a name for himself since he began work as a layout artist for Star Trek: The Animated Series in 1973.

Know for his expressive, gestural, and emotional style, Keane is one of the greats— and he got his start at Disney in ‘77 as a character animator for Penny and Bernard during the production of The Rescuers.

Since then, he has been involved in many Disney classics: from The Fox and the Hound to The Little Mermaid to Beauty and the Beast to Tangled. In addition to freelanced projects.

On March 23, 2012, after having worked approximately 37 years at Disney, Glen Keane left Walt Disney Animation Studios to pursue a personal exploration of animation and its capabilities. In his letter sent to his co-workers, he wrote,

            “
I owe so much to those great animators who mentored me — Eric Larson, Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston — as well as to the many other wonderful people at Disney whom I have been fortunate to work with in the past nearly 38 years. I am convinced that animation really is the ultimate form of our time with endless new territories to explore. I can’t resist its siren call to step out and discover them.”

Can I just be his Mother? PLEASE? I just want to hug him and stroke his hair, feed him stew and tuck him into a comfy bed and sing to him as he falls asleep so all the pain he has can just FUCK OFF for a little while. Do his laundry maybe as he sleeps and darn his trousers. Patch up the holes in his Hoodie. Give him a scarf to see him off in the morning, knitted with love in every stitch.

I just want to make this precious baby feel OK for once, is that too much to ask?

can i be his sister tho.
